lnnportal

Image of a group of people. The Learning Network North Portal is a communication and learning hub, which supports communities, networking and e-learning for use by those working in the Social Services sector across the North of Scotland.

Why? | How? | What? | Who?

Why was the portal developed?

The geography of the North of Scotland and the dispersed population centres within it increases the challenges of accessing learning opportunities, in communicating with others working in the sector and sometimes even communicating with team members and colleagues.

The Learning Network North Portal has been developed in response to feedback from those working in the sector in the North on the need for better methods of engaging with colleagues, support for local, regional and national networks, for sharing practice and accessing learning opportunities.

How does the portal work?

The portal is essentially a private and secure online environment which can be used by anyone with access to the internet. It hosts online community, network, group and course spaces and requires a username and password to gain access to it. To access the portal and for information on how to create an account / have an account set up for you and how to request the set up of a site within the portal for your own community, course or group, see the links at the top of this page.

The portal has been developed on the Moodle Course Management System which is widely recognised for its sound underpinning pedagogy and which is employed by Higher and Further Education Institutions, Virtual Communities of Practice and numerous other organisations around the world.

What is the portal used for?

The portal can be used to support numerous uses, which include:

  • a platform for hosting online communities,
  • providing a setting for rich, interactive learning,
  • as a space where colleagues can share calendars and documents, create knowledge bases, engage in group work and use the discussion facilities to converse and hold online meetings etc.

The portal contains both private and open sites - private sites are set up for communities, groups or courses which have a specific membership and the sites are only accessible to those members whilst open sites are open to all who have a portal account.

Some examples of the kinds of communities and courses hosted in the portal currently include:

  • Mental Health Officer Programme course site (private),
  • Learning Network North community site (open),
  • Online Communication Course site (private),
  • a variety of team and group spaces (private).

Who is the portal for?

The portal is for anyone working in the Social Services sector in the North of Scotland who would like to access information and discussions relevant to the sector, who would like to engage with others working in the sector be that through open community sites or community/group/team sites with specific membership and for those wishing to teach or participate in distance learning courses.
